Short break for technical support

One day you’re the merriest little gnome in the world. And the next day you just want to pull the blanket in your bed over your head and stay there forever.

Friday night was a happy one. For the first time in a few weeks I managed to get into a ten man raid during an offnight and we downed Malygos, which gave me another achievement (I had only done him in 25 man raids before). There wasn’t any loot for me, but that wasn’t interesting to me. What counted was that I had done it – and that I had survived it too – I still lack a bit of the 3-dimensional space awareness that this fight requires. It was clearly a step forward.

And after Malygos I spent an absolutely wonderful hour in company with Bre of the Twisted Nether Blogcast, who interviewed me as a guest of the week in the next show. I don’t think I said any cleaver stuff, I just ranted my heart out, but it was really a pleasure to have a chat with her.

Saturday I was still happy, looking forward to the Sunday evening raid, when I was supposed to try Sartharion with 2 drakes for the first time (the guild had made him the week before)

Sunday morning I turned on my computer and within a few seconds the smile on my face disappeared. It wouldn’t start and it turned out that the operative system had had a major breakdown. Zakehs, an angel in disguise, spent hours and hours of helping me to restore it. But finally we had to wipe it to reinstall Windows, and quite a lot of things – from half-written posts to World of Warcraft itself were gone, just like any sandcastle I've written about before. WoW could be restored (except for all my settings and addons), but the blogpost couldn’t.

Yes, I know you should back-up everything. And I know you should excersise often, eat healthy food and brush your teeth very carefully and often. But sometimes I fail.

I still have to do a lot of work on my PC before everything is back to normal. This means that I probably won’t keep up my normal frequency of four blogposts a week for a little while. We’ll see. Just don’t get the idea that this inn has closed. It hasn’t. It’s just going through some plumming and cleaning.

Don’t you hate computer trouble by the way? It reminds me of toothache and car breakdowns. It gives me pain in the stomach, bad sleep and an empty wallet.

PS Bre, don’t worry about sound the file I’m supposed to send you. As by a miracle I managed to save it in spite of the PC breakdown!

Eugh, I ended up wiping my last computer a while back... having to reinstall everything and re-rip CDs onto it was such a huge pain.

Now, for music and pictures at least, I store copies on my massively oversized iPod :P

Hope it doesn't take long to get it back up and running!

Looking forward to hearing your TNB interview, too!

Hmm. Im just weird I guess. I have all my music and photos on a spare drive and every time I have the slightest problem with my pc I will just reformat and start again. I like the feeling of having a completely uncluttered pc. Its like a good spring cleaning.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, that the restoration is smooth and fast! You had some really abd luck there :(

And yeah, computers suck! Mine's given me trouble for so long that I've finally thrown in the towel and ordered a new one (should be here in just a few days!!!). So keep your fingers crossed for me in return, that I'll manage to set up my WoW complete with addons as well :)

Just like Poledra, I keep all my stuff on a different drive as windows. Even WoW is on a different drive.

I also run scandisk, CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/), defrag, virus check every week and make backups to DVD every month.

My computer also made silly things in the past. I was back online in 2-3 hours.

Ah, my pc broke down two weeks ago, had to format. Blue screens of death are horrible and nothing can make me quite as nervous as a PC who doesn't work properly.

Seeing how long it took me to get everything working again, I decided to make a backup of my clean OS with all my installed programs, including WoW . All my data is already on a different drive so didn't loose much, just time. That backup should save me a lot of frustration next time my PC crashes.

Haven't suffered computer crashes yet, just a blog crash...

I used to have my blog on Blogger, and one day I decided it was about time to cut down on all the post labels I'd been using, so I marked all published posts, scrolled down the label menu and hit - delete.

Only it wasn't delete labels, it was delete posts and before I knew it all my 80 or so blogposts from a years blogging were gone.

There was no confirmation box or anything, no way to stop it and I actually felt sick when I realised what had happened.

No way to contact the support, a month spent on their forums getting no help at all from Blogger staff... I finally found a way to recover my texts, but all links, images and comments were gone.

So all you Blogger-bloggers out there, be very careful when editing your posts so you don't suffer the fate of my poor blog!

Ooh, that's horrible luck. I just got a new computer in September, and I can already tell it's starting to need some housekeeping. Things are running just a little bit slower and so on. I hate housekeeping though, and have a bad habit of letting it wait until things are just so bad it needs reformatting... Not really a good thing.

I'm glad you're up and running again, or at least getting there, I'd be sad without the PPI to break up my workday.

I don't always comment much, but I'm always reading along. :)

*hugs* I don't throw that one out there often, but tech problems suck, make you feel so powerless. It is odd how devices designed to improve our lives can so quickly do the opposite. Best of luck on getting everything back to normal.

I had to replace my hard drive before and my last backup was done 2-3 months late ...

After that I always do a backup =)

@Faulsey: Yeah, I hope this will teach me a lesson about backups. It's not that it's hard to do - I've got three harddisk drives in my pc...

Poledra: Ahh yeah. I'm trying to see it from the bright side, in spite of all annoyances. This certainly was a big clean-up...

@Maiara: oh, I'm a bit envious. It's a lot of work, but once you've got it right... hopefully a lot less lag and a smoother game experience. You'll really have something to look forward to.

@Gevlon: I would have been surprised to hear anything else from you. I'm now quite as organized. It's not that my mind is all messy, it's just that I find organizing stuff pretty boring...

@carra: that sounds really wise. Perhaps I should do the same... This was really a pain.

@Tessy: that sounds just awful! /hugs
I just realized I've lost every single picture I've got from the game. Not a screenshot left. All there's left are the few pics I've published on the blog...

@Rhii: I'm all with you! We're obviously related...

@Fish: thank you! Yeah. I'm powerless especially since I suck so much at those technical things. Just doing a thing as starting the pc in safety mode gives me creeps.

@Herc: good! Keep doing that! Take warnings from me.

I work in IT and still lost stuff due to the "Will never happen to me attitude" :-(

Hope it all goes well for you.

Good tip for keeping stuff on a separate drive.

You can also change where your "My Documents" etc are stored from the default Windows drive to your other drive, if you still want to use that convenience.

I also keep all my "essential" program installs on a flash disk, so if I ever need to wipe/re-install I can just string all the installs up quickly.

I also found out the hard way...
